Chicago MTD Work Returns to Local 700 Members
Teamsters Defeat City of Chicago in Jurisdictional Grievance
Teamsters Local 700 has won a jurisdictional grievance against the City of Chicago—a victory that will return work to Teamster-represented Motor Truck Drivers (MTDs).
“This is an important win for us,” said William P. Logan, Local 700 President. “Not only does this return work to our members, it also breaks a long-standing pattern of the City of Chicago taking away our members’ hard-earned work.”
The grievance dealt with Laborers driving trucks that MTDs traditionally drove for SWAP, the city’s community-based work program. Through the program, workers pick up trash, cut grass and clean up brush throughout Chicago.
The grievance award directs the city to reassign to Local 700 MTDs the driving of two SWAP pickup trucks with attached port-a-potties to SWAP sites. The award should take effect as soon as possible and no later than Feb. 20.
Teamsters Local 700 is an affiliate of Teamsters Joint Council 25, which represents more than 100,000 hardworking men and women throughout Illinois and northwest Indiana.
