Local 727 Reaches Agreement With Management of Regents Park Apartments
Regents Park workers are supported by representatives and members from Local 727 and multiple Joint Council 25 affiliates.
Four parking garage attendants represented by Teamsters Local 727 have returned to work following weeks on the strike line alongside Teamsters from across metropolitan Chicago.
The workers at Regents Park Apartments in Chicago’s Hyde Park went back to work on Nov. 23, nearly one month after they were unlawfully terminated. Management replaced the members with unorganized workers when the building changed ownership and forced the Teamsters into an unfair labor practice strike.
Local 727 reached an agreement with Regents Park owners to reinstate the members under the newly negotiated five-year Master Parking Agreement, which covers more than 3,000 parking industry workers in the Chicago area.
“We put the full strength of the union behind these members, and the Teamsters showed everyone what can be accomplished through solidarity and hard work,” said John Coli Jr., President of Local 727. “We are incredibly pleased to see our members back where they belong, working hard and providing top-notch service to the residents — just as they’ve been doing for years.”
The four Local 727 members, as well as the entire union concierge and maintenance staffs, were terminated when Antheus Capital and MAC Properties took ownership of the building at 5020 S. Lake Shore Drive. Local 727 filed unfair labor practice charges, and the ULP strike began on Nov. 7.
The building’s residents also were demanding the staff be immediately reinstated. They have spoken out at town hall meetings and circulated petitions. As of Nov. 30, dozens more wrongfully terminated union workers were still fighting for reinstatement.
“Although we are glad our Teamster members are working again, we want to extend our sympathy and support to our SEIU brothers and sisters who are still out on the picket line,” Coli said.
Teamsters Local 727 is an affiliate of Teamsters Joint Council 25, which represents more than 100,000 hardworking men and women throughout Illinois and Indiana.
