Teamsters Raise Over $10,000 for Leukemia Patient
Local 700 Members “Adopt” Teamster Family in Need
More than 500 Teamsters joined the Chicago Teamsters Hispanic Caucus and the Chicago Chapter of the Teamsters National Black Caucus to raise more than $10,000 for a Teamster family in need on November 18, 2011.
Nicholas Cruz, son of Teamsters Local 700 member and City of Chicago Motor Truck Driver Peter Cruz, was diagnosed with Pre B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in June 2011. He is currently undergoing aggressive chemotherapy at Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospital.
“I’m very proud to see the Teamsters come together for one of our brothers in need,” said Hector Hernandez, Local 700 member and President of the local Hispanic Caucus. “It’s a good time to be a Teamster.”
Hernandez, along with Local 700 member Danny Surdyk, planned the fundraiser at Teamster City. Teamsters Joint Council 25 President John T. Coli and representatives of Teamsters Local 705, Local 700, Breaker Press and Anklin Law Firm were instrumental in the success of the event.
“Events like this one truly make me proud to be a Teamster,” said William P. Logan, President-Elect of Local 700. “To know that we can help make a family’s holiday more enjoyable... it’s an unbeatable feeling.”
Local 700 members working at O’Hare and Midway airports aren’t done yet. Through a unique program with the City of Chicago, the Cruz family will be one of two families the Teamsters will “adopt” this holiday season, to provide additional support with food, toys and other necessities.
“We hope and wish the Cruz family has a very happy Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Hernandez.
Teamsters Local 700 is an affiliate of Teamsters Joint Council 25, which represents more than 100,000 hardworking men and women throughout Illinois and Indiana.
