TNBC Chicago Chapter Holds Annual Black Tie Banquet

Hundreds Recognize Caucus for Minority Representation, Member Support

In celebration of the Teamsters National Black Caucus’ legacy of equality and accomplishment, hundreds of union members and supporters gathered for the TNBC Chicago Chapter’s 4th Annual Black Tie Banquet on December 3, 2011.

In bowties and eveningwear, Teamsters acknowledged the TNBC for giving a stronger voice to minority workers and more opportunity to rank-and-file members throughout the union. The Chicago Chapter’s Executive Board also took time to recognize local representatives for their support of the caucus, including TNBC Organizer Ramon Williams and Teamsters Local 700 Secretary-Treasurer-Elect Becky Strzechowski.

“The Teamsters National Black Caucus is one of the most respected and essential extensions of our international union,” said John T. Coli, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25. “The caucus works hard to break down divisions that continue to exist in the workplace and within the union, and Joint Council 25 couldn’t be prouder to champion its cause.”

Held each year in suburban Hillside, the Black Tie Banquet helps raise money for the TNBC’s local community, organizing and political initiatives. Funds also support the TNBC Chicago Chapter/Ted Mullins Scholarship Award, given this year to Philippa Gillette, a freshman at Illinois State University. Teamsters at this year’s event enjoyed food, refreshments, raffle prizes, music from Chicago artists and a set from local comedian DJ Stix.

Williams and Strzechowski received appreciation awards from the local chapter. Nationally, the TNBC also awarded its Pioneer Leadership Award in August to President Coli for his longtime support of the Teamsters caucus.
