Hundreds of Teamsters Attend Annual Fish Fry
Local 743 Women’s Committee Talks Issues, Member Solidarity
More than 200 Teamsters dined in solidarity on September 23, 2011, as the Teamsters Local 743 Women’s Committee celebrated its Annual Fish Fry.
International Vice President At-Large and Teamsters Joint Council 41 Secretary-Treasurer Al Mixon joined Local 743 members and representatives for the evening event. The Women’s Committee, led by Local 743 Secretary-Treasurer Debra Simmons-Peterson, discussed issues important to union women throughout the night, including equality at work and Teamster pensions.
“So many Teamster women—and men—chose to spend their Friday night at the union hall that it really gave us the chance to talk about big issues,” said Simmons-Peterson. “It’s important for members to remember that Local 743 belongs to them; this is your union. We can be the ‘Union That Cares’ when you care enough to improve your life in and outside of the workplace.”
In addition to fried fish, sandwiches, desserts and other refreshments, members enjoyed a raffle, music and several video presentations. Representatives gifted longtime members in attendance with flowers, and thanked veteran Teamster and Central States employee Karen Bixler for your many years of charitable work and community organizing. Bixler took the reins of a recent fundraiser at Central States to support Teamsters affected by an F5 tornado in Joplin, Missouri. Thanks to Bixler’s leadership, the event raised more than $2,000 for Teamster families in need.
“Local 743 would like to thank Karen Bixler, Vice President Mixon and all of our members who participated in this annual event,” said Local 743 President Donnie Von Moore. “It means so much to the Executive Board you’ve elected that we take the time to break bread with our members and discuss the many ways we can continue to strengthen our powerful union.”
