Chicago Teamsters Join Annual March Against Violence

Teamsters Hispanic Caucus, Rahm Emanuel Come Together for Safer Communities

The Chicago Teamsters Hispanic Caucus marched against violence in Chicago’s Austin community on July 30, 2011, joining Mayor Rahm Emanuel to promote safe neighborhoods for children.

Hispanic Caucus President Hector Hernandez walked alongside Emanuel, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and 29th Ward Alderman Deborah Graham during the Second Annual Austin Community March Against Violence. Community leaders gathered with residents to take a stand against gang and gun violence in Chicago, while championing new curfew hours for kids in the city.

“In the Teamsters and in the City of Chicago, children are our future,” said John T. Coli, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25. “The Teamsters are ready to mobilize with Mayor Emanuel and the neighbors and families who make up our communities to support and protect our children every way that we can.”

This summer, the Chicago City Council passed a new ordinance requiring stricter curfews for children 16 years and younger living in the city. Studies have shown that curfews are an effective way to reduce violence and decrease arrests among youth.

As an affiliate of Joint Council 25, the Chicago Teamsters Hispanic Caucus has committed its resources in recent years to promoting unity among families and members in the Teamsters Union. Each year, caucus leaders welcome Teamsters throughout the Chicago metropolitan area to family-oriented picnics and sporting events, including its Annual Soccer Night at Toyota Park. This year, more than 500 members and their children attended the game.
