28th National Convention: DAY THREE

PHOTOS: Teamster Delegates Nominate International Vice Presidents

Convention Continues With Candidate Elections, Tribute to Fallen Teamsters

The voices of Teamster men and women from across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico were heard loud and clear on June 29, 2011, as delegates nominated their candidates for International office.

Day Three of the 28th International Brotherhood of Teamsters National Convention saw the formal nominations for International Vice Presidents in the Eastern, Western, Southern and Central regions, as well as Canada. Nominees must receive at least five percent of the delegate votes cast to be on the final ballot for election in November.

“The democratic process is alive and well in the Teamsters Union,” said John T. Coli, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25 and a current Central Region Vice President. “Our great union belongs to the members, and today we’ve all had a chance to play a role in shaping the future of the Teamsters.”

Prior to the day’s nomination proceedings, delegates watched a short film honoring the eight Teamsters who lost their lives in a senseless act of violence on August 3, 2010, at Hartford Distributors in Manchester, Conn. Relatives and co-workers of the fallen members were present at the convention and thanked Teamsters throughout the International for the many donations made and sympathies received over the last year.

Teamsters passed the hat in the convention hall to collect additional donations for the families of Hartford victims. By the end of Day Three, the International collected nearly $30,000 from delegates, alternate delegates and guests.

On Thursday, convention proceedings will continue when nominations are accepted for candidates for Teamsters General President and General Secretary-Treasurer. This week also saw nominations and candidate elections for International At-Large Vice Presidents and Trustees.
