The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is officially and forever a leading advocate on behalf of all public employees, thanks to the unanimous passing of a new resolution at the 28th National Convention.
Teamsters Local 700 Assistant Trustees Becky Strzechowski and William P. Logan passionately supported the resolution to protect public employees during the convention’s first day, June 27, 2011. The passage recommits the International, Teamster Joint Councils and local unions in the battle to organize, defend and represent public workers throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
“Public employees are the most visible targets of anti-union and anti-worker forces opposed to democratic unions,” said Strzechowski. “The Teamsters must be a leader in the fight to protect these workers and a strong partner for their defense whenever they’re under attack.”
Local 700, an affiliate of Teamsters Joint Council 25, represents more than 13,000 public employees throughout Illinois and the Chicago metropolitan area. Teamster representation within the International’s Public Services Division extends to more than a quarter million members in public employee positions.
The resolution acknowledges political coalitions, like Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, hoping to deny fair wages, benefits and working conditions to those serving the public. Thanks to the resolution’s unanimous support from convention delegates, the Teamsters will continue to move forward to establish and upload collective bargaining rights for these workers.
“Illinois will never fall victim to the atrocities we’ve seen committed against working families in other states, not if the Teamsters have anything to say about it,” said John T. Coli, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25 and Trustee of Local 700. “The 13,000 Teamster public employees we represent in the Chicago area are only the beginning.”
