Growing Union Expands to Larger Space in Lyons

Teamsters Local 777 is officially on the move.

After calling Brookfield home for almost two decades, the local affiliate recently moved its union offices to a nearly 9,000-square-foot building in neighboring Lyons. The new property includes two floors of office space and an expanded meeting hall equipped to accommodate the local’s growing membership.

“As Local 777 continues to organize through the metropolitan Chicago area, we need to be prepared to meet our members where they live and work,” said James T. Glimco, Local 777 President. “Our new headquarters in Lyons offers our entire membership the chance to come out and engage with their elected representatives and with one another.”

In addition to accommodating larger membership meetings, the new union hall may be used for future trainings, workshops, organizing campaigns and political initiatives.

Local 777 currently represents more than 2,300 members, including approximately 1,500 men and women working in the union-active school bus industry. The local has remained at the forefront of the Teamsters’ School Bus Workers United campaign for last several years, organizing school bus drivers, aides and attendants throughout Illinois. Founded in 1937 as a taxi cab drivers’ union, Local 777 also represents hundreds of workers in the manufacturing industry, as well as barbers and miscellaneous trades.

In April, the local union organized nearly 100 drivers with Chicago’s Latino Express school bus company.
