Teamsters Walk to Support Pat Quinn
Members Canvas Neighborhoods as Primary Election Nears
As the February 2 primaries approach, Teamsters are taking to the streets to remind working families of the strong labor record of Gov. Pat Quinn.
Members of Teamsters Locals 700 and 727 volunteered last week to reach out to voters in the Franklin and Schiller Park neighborhoods. The Weekend Walk gave Teamsters the opportunity to speak on Quinn’s positive approach and commitment to labor with as many hardworking men and women as possible.
“The more Teamsters come together within our communities to serve the common good, the longer labor issues will remain a priority,” said John T. Coli, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25. “I encourage all members to become more active in the political process and champion legislators to fight for better jobs and a stronger middle class.”
Joint Council 25 has joined the state leader in recent months to announce new job initiatives and labor-friendly projects—a direct result of Quinn having signed Illinois’ first capital bill in more than a decade last year. From $15 million to prevent layoffs at Brookfield Zoo to the construction of Chicago’s first veterans’ home and three new laws extending public works projects, Quinn has been a resounding voice for labor statewide.
“Pat Quinn is bringing jobs back to our communities,” said Hector Hernandez, a Local 700 union steward. “He’s putting the people of Illinois back to work, which is why it’s important for the Teamsters to get out there and encourage others to support him.”
The Teamsters will canvas communities in and around Oak Park and River Forest in another Weekend Walk for Quinn on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Any members interested in volunteering for the event or other voting initiatives should contact Joint Council 25 at (312) 421-2600.
Joint Council 25 has also partnered with the Service Employees International Union for a rally to support Quinn for governor. At 10 a.m., Saturday, January 30, 2010, union members will rally for a primary victory at the Holiday Inn at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart.
