Chicago Teamsters, Congressman Peter Roskam Join Helmets to Hardhats for Veterans Job Resource Forum

Job Opportunities, Skills Training Made Available for Veterans in the Union

In a collaborative effort to offer new job opportunities to America’s returning servicemen and women, Teamsters Joint Council 25, Helmets to Hardhats and Congressman Peter Roskam brought the first veterans job resource forum to DeVry University on Monday.

“Each and every one of us has an obligation to fight for those who fought for us,” said Michael Yauger, President of Teamsters Local 786 and the Teamsters’ Helmets to Hardhats Coordinator. “The job resource forum at DeVry University is a chance for labor friendly businesses and veteran supporters to reach out to our soldiers and make their return to civilian life a little easier.”

“Our nation’s veterans deserve our support for courageously serving our country,” said Congressman Peter Roskam. “The Helmets to Hardhats Job Resource Forum is a valuable resource for veterans to find jobs and help combat Illinois’ 11 percent unemployment rate.”

Helmets to Hardhats, the national program that assists military men and women in finding gainful employment in the construction trades, was on-hand to register participants within the program. Exelon Corporation, Vulcan Materials Company and other businesses also shared job opportunities and skills training with veterans.

Yauger and Roskam took time to speak directly with veterans about finding employment in a hurting economy and job placement resources available through Helmets to Hardhats.

Since building a national collaboration with Helmets to Hardhats, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has placed more than 39,000 veterans in good-paying union jobs.
