Hundreds of Teamsters Walk for Breast Cancer

Joint Council 25 Participants Raise More Than $5,000

More than 300 Teamsters gathered in Grant Park on Sunday with throngs of supporters in the Breast Cancer Network of Strength’s 18th Annual Walk to Empower.

Raising more than $5,000 in donations, Teamster members and their families joined the Joint Council 25 team on a three-mile walk near Chicago’s lakefront. Donations will benefit the Network of Strength—formerly the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization—in its financial and peer support of those currently affected by the disease.

“Breast cancer touches all of us in many personal and powerful ways, which is what makes the Walk to Empower so important,” said John T. Coli, President of Joint Council 25. “I am incredibly proud of every Teamster who recognizes the urgency of supporting those fighting against breast cancer.”

Approximately 30,000 total participants descended on Grant Park on Mother’s Day. Teamsters walked with kids, friends and pets throughout the warm spring morning.

“As a three-year survivor of breast cancer, it meant a great deal to me to have the support of the Teamsters,” said Joan Somer of Teamsters Local 705. “To see entire families joining the Walk to Empower—on Mother’s Day, no less—was a special moment I won’t soon forget.”

The Breast Cancer Network of Strength hosts additional Walk to Empower events throughout the country, including Atlanta, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Click here for more information.
