Teamsters Seek Fair Contract at Rally Today

Support Edgewater Employees for Better Wages, Increased Security and Workplace Equality

Teamsters are encouraged to show their support for union employees of Edgewater Systems for Balanced Living at an afternoon rally today.

Between 4:30 and 5:45 p.m., Teamsters will rally in support of a fair contract for the employees, who are approaching mediation in their negotiations. The most recent offer from Edgewater offers the union members wage increases of 1 percent, 1.5 percent and 1.5 percent over the next three years.

“This offer is unacceptable,” said Alfredo Gomez, Local 743 Union Representative. “Considering how much these hardworking members have to put up with, the wage increase currently on the table is insulting.”

As a social service agency, Edgewater assigns employees as many as 120 regular caseloads. With women constituting the majority of its workers, improved security has been a major factor in contract negotiations. Some clients with psychological and mental health issues have injured union members.

According to Gomez, Edgewater is constantly creating new product standards for the treatment of its clients, while numerous members have had to pay out-of-pocket for supplies to fulfill such treatment. In addition, workplace computers often malfunction and worker inequality remains high, with superiors receiving wage increases and clothing allowances.

Approximately 185 union members currently employed by Edgewater are seeking wide support from their fellow Teamsters. In today’s battle for a fair contract, local unions should send as many supporters as possible.
