University of Chicago Quadrangle Club Workers Vote for Teamsters
Local 743 Fights for Members' Job Security
The University of Chicago's Quadrangle Club employees voted unanimously to join Teamsters Local 743 on May 27.
“We are very excited to welcome the Quadrangle Club workers to our local and the Teamsters Union,” said Richard Berg, Teamsters Local 743 President. “These are hard workers who need job security and a fair contract. Local 743 will be with them every step of the way.”
The Quadrangle Club is a private club at the University of Chicago that offers dining, a bar, lounge and sleeping quarters for its members. The 33 new Teamster members work as housekeepers, servers, cooks and room coordinators.
The club is undergoing a change of management, which will affect the new Teamster members. The union will work to ensure that a majority of the employees are rehired by the new contractor in order to remain in the union and begin negotiations. If this does not happen, Teamsters Local 743 has pledged to begin a new organizing campaign.
“Our top priority right now is to convince the new management team to ensure all employees retain their jobs when the changeover occurs,” said Bill Silver, a Teamsters Local 743 Business Representative. “After that, we will begin negotiations to secure a winning Teamster contract.”
Teamsters Local 743 represents 12,000 members in health care, professional, technical, office, warehouse and mail order industries in the Chicagoland area and Northwest Indiana.
