Teamsters Rally for First Student Drivers

Crest Hill Bus Drivers Vote to Join Teamsters on May 30

Chicago Teamsters came together May 28 in Crest Hill, Illinois to support First Student bus drivers as they endeavor to join the Local 179.

The Crest Hill First Student bus drivers will vote on joining Teamsters Local 179 on May 30.

“We need fairness in this job, and the Teamsters can help us get that,” said Kristen Oberts, a school bus driver in Crest Hill for four years.  “We are going to win on Friday, and it will be great to finally be apart of the Teamsters.”

There are 450 school bus drivers at the Crest Hill hub.  The drivers work around Joliet and Plainfield.

“These school bus drivers work very hard to transport our children every day, and deserve fair wages and to be treated with respect,” said Tom Flynn, Teamsters Local 179 Business Agent and Organizer.  “The Teamsters are out here today to show these drivers what kind of support they can expect from the Teamsters when they join our union.”

Teamster Locals 301, 330, 673, 703, 710, 734, 777, GCC District Council 4 and Joint Council 25 joined Local 179 at the rally.

Teamsters Local 179 is led by President Tom White and represents more than 2,500 members in the Joliet region in the construction, warehouse, commercial service and freight industries and the public sector.
