Teamsters Local 142 Holds 3rd Annual Women's Conference
Workshop Featured Discussion on Member Participation, Stress Management
Teamster women gathered at Local 142 in Gary, Indiana for the 3rd Annual Women’s Conference on May 10, 2008.
“This is the third Local 142 Women’s Conference I’ve attended,” said Tammy Brooks, a 22-year Teamster and Riter Automotive worker. “I think it is very important to be an active member of your union, and it is great to have an event especially for women.”

More than 40 Teamster members attended the event, which featured information on building membership participation as well as dealing with stress.
Iliana Flores, Training Coordinator from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Department of Training & Development, presented an interactive workshop on increasing member participation through communication, education, action and one-on-one structure.
“The Teamsters are only as strong as its members, and getting the membership involved makes us unbreakable,” Flores said. “Women are a very important part of this union and their voices need to be heard.”

The workshop also featured Wanda Barney, Program Manager of Behavior Health Services for St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana. Barney spoke on the impact of stress on the body.
“We created this event to get women Teamster members involved in the union,” said Harvey Jackson, Teamsters Local 142 Stewards Council Chairman. “Each year, we provide an educational experience as well as a celebration of working women.”
The Local 142 Stewards Council works hard throughout the year to educate and support members. Besides member training, they raise money for members in need, scholarship awards and a food pantry.
Teamsters Local 142 represents 4,500 members in northwest Indiana in the construction, warehouse, commercial service and freight industries and the public sector.
