“May Day is a very significant holiday for the labor movement,” said John T. Coli, Teamsters Joint Council 25 President. “It is so important to remember our brothers and sister before us who fought for the rights that we have today. The Teamsters work hard every day to continue in their footsteps to make the lives of working men and women better.
May Day traditionally celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labor movement, most significantly the eight-hour workday. The first day of May also commemorates the 1886 Haymarket Massacre, which occurred in Chicago.
Teamster Locals 673, 703, 710, 727, 777 and Joint Council 25 participated in the event.
Similar marches are held around the country to celebrate workers’ rights. Approximately 15,000 people participated in the Chicago march this year.
Teamsters Joint Council 25 is the governing body of 22 local unions in the greater Chicagoland area. The Joint Council assists its locals in coordinating Teamster events, solving problems and organizing.
