Parking Industry Labor Management Council Hosts Educational Seminar

Importance of Effective Communication in the Workplace Discussed

More than 100 parking industry employees and managers attended an educational seminar on good labor relations.

The Parking Industry Labor Management Council (PILMC) arranges programs twice a year to bring together managers, supervisors and stewards to learn about different topics.

Andrew S. Goldberg led the class entitled “The Secret to Employee Retention, Motivation and Good Labor Relations.”  Goldberg is an attorney with the Chicago law firm Laner, Muchin, Dombrow, Becker, Levin and Tominberg, Ltd.

“Part of having an effective labor relations program is to have effective communication with your employees. Better communication equals better productivity and less problems,” Goldberg said.  “The more informative communication you have, the less formal training you need.  And when you do have training, it is much easier because you have already built a relationship.”

Goldberg emphasized the importance of maintaining effective labor relations by utilizing proper communication with employees through:

  • Building relationships,
  • Encouraging effectively,
  • Creating motivation,
  • Firm, fair and consistent discipline, and
  • Listening and talking.

“Good communication between employees and managers cannot be emphasized enough,” said John T. Coli, Teamsters Local 727 Secretary-Treasurer.  “Andrew’s presentation outlines specific steps to create a professional, respectful and productive work environment.”

The Parking Industry Labor Management Council promotes the parking industry's important contributions to the Chicago metropolitan area; improves communication between representatives of labor and management; and enhances economic development in the industry.

Local 727 represents approximately 4,590 members in Chicago in the auto livery chauffeurs, funeral directors, embalmers, apprentices, ambulance drivers and helpers, taxicab drivers, miscellaneous garage employees, car washers, greasers, polishers and wash rack attendants industries.
