Teamsters Local 743 Hosts Stewards and Activists' Training

The Role of the Steward and Worksite Issues Emphasized

More than 40 participants attended one of two Stewards and Activists' Training sessions held at Teamsters Local 743 on February 13.

“Stewards are a very important part of the Teamsters and deserve a lot of respect for the work that they do,” said Richard Berg, Teamsters Local 743 President. “It is very important at Local 743 to be proactive about steward’s education and training.  This class is the first of many to come.”

The training session covered:

  • The rights and responsibilities of stewards;
  • Grievance process;
  • Organizing worksites;
  • Getting members involved;
  • New members;
  • Political activism; and
  • Creating a strong stewards network.

Members of Teamsters Local 743 attended one of two training sessions on February 13 in Chicago.

Many of the participants were long-time stewards, but some were Local 743 members interested in taking on more responsibilities at their worksites.

“I’m attending this class to learn more about what a steward does,” said Michael Yarbrough, a 23-year employee of Blue Cross/Blue Shield.  “My co-workers have been telling me I would make a good steward for awhile, but this training has really made me interested in becoming involved.”

Teamsters Local 743 will be holding regular stewards’ training sessions at the local.  For more information, call 773-254-7460.
